I had my first contact with the IT world at the age of 11, on a friend’s Commodore 64, with 64 KB of RAM and a BASIC interpreter. Soon afterwards I got a 286 PC, with an EGA graphic card and monitor, at a time when Hercules monochrome monitors were still widely used.
At first I programmed in QBASIC and GW-BASIC, a legacy to the time spent coding on the Commodor e 64, but not long after that I switched to Turbo Pascal. I stuck with Pascal for about 5 years until a highschool classmate (good friend of mine) managed to persuade me to switch to C, by telling me it was much better for coding games (which it is 🙂 ). Throughout highschool I was mostly interested in game programming, mostly in C, but occasionally touched on subjects like assembler output routines. In my last year of highschool I started working with C++ and Object Oriented Programming (OOP).
I attended the courses of the Technical University in Oradea for 5 years, graduating in 2005 with a diploma in Computer Science. I continued my education, receiving a masters degree in the same field of study 2 years later.
Though I have used many programming languages, including C, C++, Pascal, C#, Java, PHP, HTML, Lisp and Prolog, C++ is clearly my favorite. I just love the power and freedom given to the programmer, and the responsibility that comes with them.
From 2004 until October 2007, I worked on a Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM) application for a company based in the USA. When I joined the company, I took over the C++ development part from the previous programmer who had left the project. The code was pretty much a mess, poorly documented, with bits and pieces recycled from other projects and different naming conventions used within the same block of code, making the process of understanding it much more difficult than it needed to be. This has led me to continually try to improve on my code’s tidiness, picking a naming convention, and sticking with it.
Computers are not my only interest I have a passion for reading. I love reading the Bible; it’s the ultimate Love story. Some of my favorite books are C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce, John Grisham’s The Pelican Brief and Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. I am also deeply interested in motor racing – I love racing go-karts with my friends, and I am a huge Formula 1 fan. I also love riding my Honda sports bike whenever possible.
